The D.O.N.A.L.D. and the Dansk Donaldist Forening invite you to the 46th congress in Flensburg/Flensborg on March 29 with a pre-meeting in Tinglev/Tingleff, Denmark, on 28 March and a post-meeting in Glücksburg/Lyksborg on 30 March. The Nationella Ankistförbundet i Sverige (kvack) has also announced its participation. A link to the registration forms can be found at the bottom of the page. Apart from that, to register, feel free to write to praesidente@donald.org or text/call +49 151 51035443.

The conference venue is Flensburg University of Applied Sciences, Kanzleistraße 91-93 (building H) - starting at 11:00 am with a donaldic get-together from 10:00 am (you may take the city bus to the Campus Hochschule stop. The hall has 200 seats, so prior registration for the congress is not obligatory, but advance information for the purpose of button production and gurgleurp planning is certainly not wrong.

Dinner is at Restaurant Borgerforeningen (webpage in Danish), on Holm 17 (near the central bus station in the city centre - that's a relaxed 1.8 km walk down the hill - otherwise buses 5B and 8B run to the central bus station every ten minutes). There are also enough seats available in the hall, but registration is required by March 18 for obvious reasons. The cost price for a very varied buffet is expected to be €15 / 112 DKK per guest.

The pre-meeting will take place in Tinglev, Denmark, in the local community centre (Borgerhuset, Tinglev Midt 2). The doors will be open to travellers at 16:00, with a buffet planned for 18:45. The event ends at 21:00/21:15, as the train to Flensburg departs at 21:29 (arrival 21:53). Trains coming from Flensburg stop in Tinglev at 16:30 and 18:30. From the station it is a 500 metre walk, there are plenty of parking spaces available. Here we are at 10 € (75 DKK), registration is also required by 18 March 2025.

Afterwards, there will be a city tour for early risers at 9:30 a.m. and a visit to Glücksburg/Lyksborg Castle in the north-east of Flensburg from 11:00 a.m. It is possible to travel individually by city bus 21 or your own 313, for the purpose of discounted admission tickets for groups and any desired guided tours (please mark) / travel plans (the bus should not burst), registration is requested by 18 March. You will also find further information and tips for self-guided tours in Schleswig-Holstein on the congress page.

How to get there

Flensburg/Flensborg is halfway along the European route 45, which runs from just before Nordkapp to Sicily - so it's actually very central. From here, it is 1000 motorway kilometres to the Austrian border, and if you took the ferry to Oslo, you would almost be in Trondheim if you travelled north and Stockholm if you travelled north-west. If you have the time, you can combine the congress with a trip through nearby Denmark, Norway or Sweden - the location of the pre-meeting, Tinglev, has direct connections from Copenhagen, and night trains to Stockholm even stop in the nearby border town of Padborg.

As already mentioned, Flensburg is easy to reach by motorway with a 313, from Hamburg it is 150 km, from Brunswick 350 km, from Berlin 425 km, from Cologne 575 km, from Munich 950 km, from Vienna or Zurich it is only 1050 km. If you prefer to travel without your own car but on tarmac, you can also travel from many larger and smaller cities by long-distance coach.

By train, it takes just under 2 hours from Hamburg Hbf, Europe's largest railway station in terms of passenger numbers, with regional trains running at least every hour, plus hourly trains from Kiel and Neumünster, which are also connected to the long-distance train network. There is also a daily EuroCity train pair operated by Czech Railways travelling directly from Prague (8.5 hours) with stops in Dresden and Berlin (just over 4 hours) to Flensburg. Northbound trains run every two hours from Fredericia with connections from Aarhus or Copenhagen. If you want to come directly to the pre-meeting from the south without stopping in Flensburg, ECs coming from Hamburg can also stop in Padborg and then continue on to Tinglev.

Please note: For cross-border journeys from Flensburg to Tingleff or similar, it is always better to buy tickets from Danish State Railways than via bahn.de (a single journey from Flensburg to Tingleff currently costs DKK 52 / € 7, while booking via the DB app costs € 19).

If you live far away, travelling by plane is also an option. Flensburg itself does not have an airport, but the airports of Billund, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Sønderborg and Sylt are more or less nearby.

If you have any travel questions, please contact [email protected] or text/call +49 151 51035443.

What to do in South Jutland?

Schleswig-Holstein was part of the domain of Danish kings for hundreds of years and shares many historical sights with its Danish neighbour, especially in the north. The Danewerk (the ‘Great Wall of Denmark’) and Haithabu (a Viking settlement) near Schleswig are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as are the Wadden Sea on the Atlantic Ocean in the west and Lübeck's historic city centre. There are several statue museums worth visiting, such as Gottorf Castle and the Molfsee Open-Air Museum. On the Danish side, there are Jelling and Christiansfeld near the border, and Legoland is located in Billund right next to the airport. In Flensburg itself, the Maritime Museum or the Phänomenta are tempting.

Call for Papers

Unique for the Flensburg Congress: Presentations can be given in German or English (or Danish, Swedish, Low Saxon) (please include one information sentence per slide/summary at the end in English or German). A presentation can last between 5 and 20 minutes and should preferably not be a recitation of a future article, but a summary of the research work (overview/core conclusions) or a project. An abstract must also be submitted, which will then be translated by the congress organisers to ensure that each participant has a good overview: each congress participant will receive a comprehensive booklet. Only a few presentation slots are still available! In addition to the lectures, there will be quizzes and raffles in between, in keeping with Scandinavian tradition. Please send your lecture registrations, ideas, quizzes etc. by e-mail to [email protected].

Accommodiation

With the exception of ibis and Wyndham, there are no brand-name hotels in Flensburg; most visitors find accommodation in guesthouses, family or city hotels and holiday flats. There are plenty of rooms between €40 and €80 per night, and the price per person may be halved for a large proportion of the offers, especially for double occupancy. It's low season in the region, so don't worry, there's something for everyone - if in doubt, just write to [email protected] or text/call +49 151 51035443.

Registration

Here you can find a registration form (in German) - for the pre-meeting, the dinner and the post-meeting, please complete this by March 18 - or just mail to [email protected] or call/text +49 151 51035443 anytime. Registration for the congress itself is not compulsory, but welcome (there'll be free brochures, stickers, buttons e.g.).
